Grundsätzlich kann man Aussagesätze, Fragen und auch Aufforderungen in die indirekte Rede umwandeln. Alle Satzarten haben in der indirect speech im Englischen gemeinsam, dass sie mit einem Einleitungssatz beginnen.
Der Einleitungssatz enthält Informationen dazu, wer den ursprünglichen Satz gesagt hat und um welche Satzart es sich handelt. Ein solcher einleitender Satz kann sowohl in der Gegenwart als auch in der Vergangenheit stehen. Einleitende Sätze für die indirekte Rede im Englischen sind also zum Beispiel:
⇒ John asked … → John hat gefragt …
⇒ Mary tells me that … → Mary erzählt mir, dass …
Wenn du die indirekte Rede im Englischen bildest, dann musst du auf die Zeitform achten. Die Zeitform richtet sich nach dem einleitenden Satz und nach dem, was gesagt wird. Ist dein einleitender Satz in der Vergangenheit, dann ändert sich die Zeitform in der indirekten Rede – zum Beispiel von der Gegenwartsform in die Vergangenheit.

Wie löst man Übungen zur direkten und indirekten Rede?
Mit am wichtigsten ist bei Aufgaben zu indirekter Rede im Englischen die Zeitform. Achte genau darauf, in welcher Zeitform die ursprüngliche Aussage und in welcher Zeitform der einleitende Satz steht. Man bezeichnet das als einen backshift of time.
Denn die Zeitform der direkten Rede rutscht eine Zeitstufe tiefer in die Vergangenheit, wenn der einleitende Satz auch in der Vergangenheit ist. Wenn der einleitende Satz in der Gegenwart ist, dann bleibt die Zeitform erhalten.
