Definition

Each other und one another sind rezipro­ke Pronomen (reciprocal pronouns). Sie werden verwendet, wenn die Handlung auf Gegenseitigkeit beruht. Handelt es sich um mehr als zwei Personen, so kann man each other oder one another benutzen.

Beispiele

  • Romeo and Juliet fell in love with each other.
  • Lucy and Robert were looking at each other.
  • We couldn’t see each other / one another.
  • The people at Doreen’s party shook hands with each other / one another.

Im Englischen wird unterschieden, ob eine wechselseitige Beziehung vorliegt (each other/one another) oder die Handlung reflexiv ist (themselves). Im Deutschen steht in beiden Fällen „sich“.

  • They looked at each other. (Sie sahen sich [gegenseitig] an.)
  • They looked at themselves in the mirror. (Sie sahen sich an. [Jeder betrachtete sich selbst.])
