Formen und Gebrauch
one (Singular) oder ones (Plural) können zuvor erwähnte zählbare Substantive ersetzen.
Beispiele:
- Tom is a friendly boy. He really is a nice one.
- They had lots of boats. They even had big ones.
Im Englischen können der bestimmte Artikel (article) oder auch Adjektive (adjectives) nicht allein stehen. Sie benötigen one als Stützwort.
- I like all the shirts, but I will buy the blue one.
- That’s Sally’s house. The one with the large windows.
In bestimmten Fällen kann one/ones als Stützwort entfallen:
- bei Superlativen: The yellow car is the cheapest (one).
- bei Ordnungszahlen: He was the first (one) to arrive.
- bei Demonstrativpronomen: The red carpet is nicer than that (one).
- bei each, any, another, either und neither: One girl used a fork, another (one) a spoon.
- bei which: There are lots of teas. Which (one) would you like?
Unterschiede zum deutschen ,man'
Um etwas allgemein zu formulieren, wird im Deutschen oft „man“ verwendet. Diesem deutschen Wort entsprechen im Englischen you und one.
You have to cry when you cut onions. / One shouldn’t work during the holidays.
one ist formeller als you. Es kann auch durch einen Satz im Passiv ausgedrückt werden.
One has to admit that the prime minister’s speech was good. / Nothing could be said about the cause of the accident.
they bietet eine weitere Möglichkeit, etwas unpersönlich und allgemein auszudrücken. Im gesprochenen Englisch hört man auch oft they say (= people say).
They celebrate Thanksgiving in the United States. / They say that the swimming pool is open.
