Definition
Demonstrativpronomen bzw. Demonstrativbegleiter (demonstrative determiner) weisen direkt auf einen Gegenstand oder auf eine Person hin. Je nach Gebrauch können this und that, these und those Demonstrativbegleiter oder Demonstrativpronomen sein. Als Demonstrativpronomen (demonstrative pronoun) ersetzten sie ein Substantiv und stehen deshalb allein.

this und these weisen auf Personen oder Dinge in der näheren Umgebung zum Sprecher hin. that und those weisen auf Dinge hin, die sich vom Sprecher weiter entfernt befinden. this und that werden jedoch oft synonym gebraucht

„This is mine, that is yours.“ - This book (here) belongs to Helen.
- Can I borrow these CDs (here), please?
- Is that man (over there) your English teacher?
- Do those boys (over there) go to your school, too?
