We’re standing in front of the Zwinger, a Baroque building that was built by August the Strong between 1710 and 1728. Even though the building was under construction for nine more years, it was officially opened in 1719 to celebrate the wedding of Frederick Augustus. The structure was destroyed in 1945 at the end of World War II during the firebombing of Dresden. The Zwinger has always been important to the people of Dresden, so reconstruction started right after the war was over, and parts of the Zwinger were reopened to the public in 1951. The full reconstruction was completed in 1963.

You can see that parts of the building, such as the statues along the upper walkways, are being restored or cleaned at the moment. Much of the facade and decorations on the building are made from sandstone. Sandstone is a natural material that can be found in this area, for example in the Saxony Switzerland area, where we’ll go hiking later this week.

Today, several museums are located inside the Zwinger. Every summer, concerts are held in the courtyard where we are standing right now, but the courtyards are usually open to the public. The Zwinger is a very popular tourist attraction, and has been visited by millions of people from around the world.
