    Reading comprehension

Read the text and answer the following questions:

    1. How are children influenced with regard to their beauty ideals?
    2. What are the consequences, and why is it that girls are more affected than boys?

Researchers have established that children have become direct targets for marketing strategies. On average they might watch as many as 40,000 commercials a year on TV, let alone adverts on the Net or in papers. This way, they are under constant pressure to keep up with images of what they should look like, what clothes they should wear or what else they should have. This, Professor Mankel from Gothenburg University suggests in a widely read essay in "Children Today", results in many children suffering from stress symptoms you would normally find in adults. Young girls are probably worst hit by the onslaught of advertising campaigns, and more and more often they suffer from depression and lack of self-esteem because they can't meet the beauty ideala set by the cosmetic and fashion industries, sometimes with disastrous consequences for their health.
