These toy bears sold like hot cakes and within a year Michtum founded a toy firm that produced hundreds of thousands of teddy bears. Those who practised and supported the hunt said that hunting was necessary to keep the number of foxes small. One day, he visited Mississippi and decided to go out hunting for the day. After several hours, he had not shot anything, when one of his aides discovered a lost bear cub (Bärenjunges) wandering through the woods.  Fox-hunting was one of the most criticized activities in Britain. This “sport” involved chasing a fox with a pack of hounds (eine Meute Jagdhunde). The teddy bear is today so much a part of children’s and grown-ups’ lives that it is hard to believe it was only invented in 1902. The fox had to flee over the open countryside, as all the foxholes had been blocked before the hunt. When the hunters, who rode on horses, finally caught the fox, it was brutally killed by the dogs. It is named after Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt (1858–1919), the twenty-sixth president of the United States of America (1901–1909). He caught it, tied it to a tree and brought the President to this tree to shoot the little bear. Roosevelt, however, could not bring himself to  shoot the defenceless little bear and ordered it to be set free. Reporters following the President made this incident known all over the country. Clifford Berryman, a cartoonist, drew a cartoon showing the President and the bear cub. They also said that rural Britain needed the hunt because jobs depended on it. Those who were against the hunt said that it was not needed to limit the number of foxes and they wanted it banned because it was unnecessarily cruel. Morris Michtum, a toyshop owner, put together some little toy bears using the cartoon as a guide. Foxhunting has been forbidden in Britain since 2005. “Teddy” Roosevelt was a keen hunter.
